Deck Cost Calculator

Thinking about building a new deck? Enter its length and width, pick a decking material and your country, and this calculator prices the boards from current market ranges. You can also add framing, professional installation, railing and stairs, and every item you add is priced separately and shown in the breakdown.

The headline range always says what it covers. With only the decking selected, it is a material estimate, not a full project cost.

How the Deck Cost Calculator Works

  1. Enter the deck length and width. The area is length x width.
  2. Choose the decking material and your country, which sets the units, currency and price range.
  3. Add waste if you want it. Blank means none. It applies to the boards only.
  4. Add optional items: framing, installation labor, railing and stairs.
  5. The calculator applies the dataset prices. Each item is priced as a low-to-high range, and the ranges are added together.
  6. You see the total and every step, with your own numbers, so you can check the arithmetic.

How Much Does a Deck Cost?

There is no single answer. A deck's cost depends on its size, the decking material, whether the framing is new, who installs it, how much railing and how many stairs it needs, the condition of the site, and your local market and suppliers. This page does not quote a universal figure. It gives you a range from the BuildCost dataset for the choices you make.

Deck Cost Components

  • Decking boards: priced per square foot, material only.
  • Framing: the substructure under the boards, priced per square foot, material only.
  • Installation labor: priced per square foot, with different rates for ground-level and elevated decks.
  • Railing: priced per linear foot, installed.
  • Stairs: priced per step, installed.

Decking Material Options

These are the materials currently priced in the calculator. Run it once per material to compare them on the same deck size.

  • Pressure-Treated Wood Decking
  • Cedar Wood Decking
  • Redwood Decking
  • Tropical Hardwood (Ipe / Cumaru)
  • Composite Decking (General Average)
  • Standard Composite Decking
  • Mid-Range Composite Decking
  • Premium Composite Decking
  • PVC Decking

Wood decking is generally the lower-cost group and needs regular maintenance such as sealing. Composite and PVC boards cost more up front and are designed to need less upkeep. The calculator compares purchase prices only. It does not model maintenance or lifespan.

Labor and Installation

If you choose professional installation, the calculator adds a per-square-foot labor rate, using a higher rate for elevated decks than for ground-level ones. If you choose DIY, or leave it blank, no labor is added. The calculator does not estimate how much money DIY saves, because that depends on your skills, tools and time.

What Affects Deck Cost?

Included in this calculator: deck area, decking material, your waste allowance, framing type, ground-level or elevated installation labor, railing length and type, stair steps, and your market.

Not included: footings, permits, delivery, site preparation, demolition of an existing deck, lighting, and finishing or sealing. Access, slope, soil and the complexity of the design can also change a real quote.

Deck Cost Planning Guidance

  • Lay out the deck dimensions on the ground before you commit to a size, and check access for materials.
  • Think about drainage, existing structures and where stairs will land.
  • Price more than one material to see how the range changes.
  • Ask contractors to itemise footings, permits, demolition and finishing, because this calculator does not price them.
  • Structure, railing height, fastening and footing depth are safety matters. Follow your local building requirements and get professional guidance before building.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Deck Cost Calculator work?

You enter the deck length and width, choose a decking material and country, and the calculator prices the decking boards per square foot from the BuildCost dataset. If you add framing, installation labor, railing or stairs, each is priced from its own dataset entry and added. You see a low-to-high range and every step of the calculation.

What information do I need to estimate deck cost?

At minimum you need the deck length, width and the decking material. For a fuller estimate, also decide whether you need new framing, whether you will hire installers and whether the deck is at ground level or elevated, how many feet of railing you need, and how many stair steps.

Does deck size affect the total cost?

Yes. Decking, framing and installation labor are priced per square foot, so they scale with the deck area. Railing is priced per linear foot and stairs per step, so they depend on those measurements instead.

Which decking materials can I compare?

Every material that has pricing in the BuildCost dataset appears in the Decking Material list, including wood, tropical hardwood, composite in several grades, and PVC. Run the calculator once per material to compare them on the same deck size.

Does the calculator include labor?

Only if you choose professional installation. Labor is priced per square foot from the dataset, with separate rates for ground-level and elevated decks. If you choose DIY or leave it blank, no labor is added.

Does the calculator include railings and stairs?

Yes, when you enter them. Railing needs a type and a length, and is priced per linear foot as installed. Stairs need a number of steps and are priced per step as installed. If you leave them blank they are not included.

Does the calculator include waste?

Yes, if you enter a waste percentage. It increases the decking quantity only, not framing, labor, railing or stairs. If you leave the field empty, no waste is added.

Does the calculator include permits?

No. The dataset has no permit pricing, so permits are listed under not included. The same goes for footings, delivery, site preparation, demolition of an existing deck, lighting and finishing. Check your local requirements and ask contractors for these separately.

Is the deck cost estimate an exact quote?

No. It is an estimate based on market price ranges and the numbers you enter. A contractor or supplier quote depends on your actual site, design, materials and schedule, and can differ from this range.

Disclaimer This calculator gives a planning estimate based on market price ranges and the details you enter. It is not a contractor or supplier quote, and it is not a structural design tool. Confirm design, footings, permits and safety requirements with local authorities and qualified professionals.
